Historic. Lively. Unique.
"Freinsheim overflows with history, wine and fruit". This is how the Freinsheim-born writer Hermann Sinsheimer described his home town.
Freinsheim's townscape is characterised by the well-preserved medieval town wall with its many towers, the two town gates and the baroque and classicist town centre. Thanks to a successful renovation of the old town, Freinsheim now appears in its old splendour. Particularly worth seeing is the historic town hall from the 18th century, framed by the market square and the late Gothic church.
The Freinsheim town wall was built by the Electoral Palatinate as a defensive ring against the Counts of Leiningen, with whom they were in constant conflict.
Freinsheim's agriculture and especially its viticulture play a prominent role in the first documented references in 773 and 780. So it is obvious that wine is honoured with many festivities - be it the Red Wine Walk (Rotweinwanderung) in winter, the Old Town Festival (Altstadtfest) in late spring, the Town Wall Festival (Stadtmauerfest) in summer or the Culinary Wine Walk (Kulinarische Weinwanderung) in autumn, to mention just a few.
A special feature on the outskirts of Freinsheim is the only almond orchard in Germany. The cultivation of almonds is a very old tradition and dates back to the influence of the Romans in the region.
Cultural highlights are provided by events in the Busch-Hof civic hall, the Retzer estate and the churches, as well as the changing exhibitions in the various galleries.
Freinsheim has a lot to offer in every season. Come and see for yourself!
Freinsheim´s streets and alleys
The old town is angled, the alleys are crooked - we won't lose you, but a map can't hurt...
We have also posted a printable map of the old town for you. In addition, we give you a compact overview of the sights of the old town with plans and addresses to help you prepare your stay. Of course, you can get even more detailed information at the Tourist Information centre "i-Punkt Freinsheim".
