Great view and rare animals.
Balcony of the Palatinate
At 212 metres above sea level, Herxheim am Berg is the highest village directly on the German Wine Route and thus a guarantee of magnificent views. The Herxheim Schlossgarten (castle garden) is therefore not called the "Balcony of the Palatinate" for nothing. See for yourself the breathtaking view and the magnificent surroundings!
The Cave
In 1998, the "Karsthöhle", unique for our region, was discovered. This limestone cave, which is several million years old, is for geologists an incorruptible testimony to the fact that the sea had once advanced that far. The cave, which was still filled in at the time, was discovered by local historian Eric Hass.
With the help of the Speyer State Archaeology Department, three geologists and a cave biologist, the cave was declared a natural monument in spring 2012.
About 20 lower animal species have already been discovered in the cave, which are optimally adapted to life in caves. The specimens of the little-described white cave isopod (Trichoniscus helveticus) found in 2008 caused the greatest sensation. The discovery of this crustacean is considered the first find in the Palatinate. White cave isopods have only been discovered in nine caves throughout Germany.
