The city of Speyer
The more than 2000 years old imperial city combines lively history and lively present. The Maximilianstraße, Speyer's promenade, with its many cafés, stores and baroque houses, seems almost Mediterranean - here you can feel the Palatinate way of life.
The city is home to a large number of monuments and museums. The most famous building is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cathedral of Speyer - one of the largest Romanesque buildings in the world. As the burial place of Salian, Hohenstaufen and Habsburg rulers, the cathedral is considered a symbol of medieval imperialism.
In the immediate vicinity of the imperial cathedral is the Historical Museum of the Palatinate, one of the most visited cultural history museums in Germany.
Exhibits from the fields of aviation, railroads, firefighting and shipbuilding can be found at the "Technik Museum Speyer", very close to the city center.

The Palatinate on the Rhine
The Rhine is the eastern border of the Palatinate to neighbouring Baden. Coming from the south, it flows past the fortress city of Germersheim, past Speyer and the industrial town Ludwigshafen, until it then forms the border between Rhinehesse and Hesse, starting at Worms, the City of the Nibelungs.
The Palatinate Rhine Plain is one of Germany's vegetable gardens - the fertile arable soil and the special climate provide a wealth of delights. From asparagus to strawberries, early potatoes and pumpkins, you will find everything for fresh cuisine here. You can shop directly at the roadside or in one of the numerous farm stores.
The countryside can also be explored on a well-developed, flat network of bike paths through fields and past small villages with half-timbered facades on the "Rhine Cycle Path" (Rhein-Radweg) or the "Cabbage and Turnip Cycle Path" (Kraut und Rueben-Radweg).
A special tip: From the slightly elevated vineyard slopes of the Freinsheim holiday region, you can enjoy a fascinating view of the illuminated industrial plant of the BASF headquarters in Ludwigshafen from dusk onward.
